Alo Presidente

This wikipedia article discusses former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez’s tv show Alo Presidente. The article seems relatively biased against the topic, portraying it in a negative light more often that not. Most of the sources used are from American newspapers such as the New York Times, however there are also some jorunal articles. Additionally, some information is taken from a book which seems very hostile towards Hugo Chavez from the offset. In general, I will work to try to make the article less biased, as well as add some more information in general.

Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality

For my article, there really is not a lot of bias because there is not really a lot of content to have a bias on. It really is just a summary of Mariategui’s work, with not much commentary or obvious biases in its representation. A criticism of this summary is that it is not clear if an agreed fact is being stated or if it is an opinion from Mariategui. One of the only sources so far are the source itself, Seven Interpretive Essays. The only other source is the one I added the other day, which quoted someone citing the work as an inspiration. I have already started improving it, with adding an “Impact” section about the effect that the book has had. I could also improve its publication history, and possibly background as to what brought Mariategui to write the essays.

Escambray Rebellion

This article is about the Escambray Rebellion which was year rebellion based in the Escambray mountains. The Rebellion began in 1959 after Castro took power and was a movement to remove him from power in favor of a new government. The group was comprised of both former members of the 26th of July movement as well as Batista loyalists. This group is significant to this class as it demonstrates the division amongst Cubans immediately following the revolution as well as examining the idea of a tolerant world as the United States was an ally of the Rebellion up until the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion. The article portrays the rebellion through an American lens as it describes the defeat of the Rebellion taking place immediately after the Bay of Pigs invasion when in actuality the rebellion carried on for three more years. This American bias is seen in the source list as many sources are American in origin and are heavily focused on the CIA involvement with the Rebellion. If I were to improve this article I would examine non-CIA related operations or issues that the Rebellion was a part of and look to dive into the details of their stance beyond being an anti-Castro movement. In other words I am interested in their endgame/goals.

Sara Gómez

This article is on Sara Gómez a Cuban film maker. She is an important figure to look at because she was the first Cuban director. This is another example to the rich history of Latin America. The Arts culture in Latin America is an important element to its history it highlights primary sources that give us point of view, biases and many more personal and communal experiences. As for the article itself I didn’t see many biases in this wikipedia entry. There isn’t a lot of information given. I think adding more information about who she was how she used her art/ media outlet as well as adding more information about all of her films would greatly improve this article. I don’t think there are enough variety of sources, so adding new references would increase the article to meet Wikipedia’s standards.

Brasil Sem Homophobia

This represents Latin American History because there is a definite history of LGBT people being discriminated against in Brazil. There is a slight bias against Conservative Brazil. There is nothing on the talk page, except for the statement of this page as a part of the WikiProject Brazil, and that it has been looked at by members of WikiProject Articles for creation. There is one reference, and it is the actual initiative that was launched, and is in Portuguese. There are many external links, however many of these are also in Portuguese and cannot be read by non-speakers. The first thing that can be done to improve this article is pulling from more sources.  Currently, there is only one source. Another thing that can be done to edit and improve this article is to take out the direct quotes that are used, and replace them with original, paraphrased information. There is also room for much more information, and I can add relevant pictures.

Role of women in Nicaraguan Revolution

This source does a good job of providing a general overview of the role women played in the Nicaraguan Revolution. There are three different sections in the article, a description, women in the armed struggle, and feminist ideology. None of these sections seem to present a bias. They all seem to come from a neutral perspective and background. There are six sources cited at the end of the article, and two of them are from the same author. However, none of these sources are actually referenced in the article so there is no way of knowing what information came from which source. The sources are also all print sources which seem to be published in the US rather than actually being from Nicaraguan sources. I can improve this source by adding citations so that readers can understand where the information is coming from. I can also expand on the sources to add more voices from Latin America and Nicaragua. There are also no images for this Wikipedia page, so I could add some relevant images to make the post more interesting.

Gustavo Gutiérrez

The Wikipedia article on Gustavo Gutiérrez, a Peruvian priest and advocate for Christian socialism, gives the reader a strong understanding of his philosophical arguments, with both detailed summaries and his own quotes explaining them more or contextualizing them when necessary. This is the source of a lot of the article’s strengths and weaknesses, as it answers a lot of questions one might have about liberation theology, but it does this at the expense of discussion about his life’s work and influence on revolutionary movements in Latin America. Liberation theology already has a Wikipedia article – and it’s far longer than this one – so I feel it would benefit the article to focus more on Gutiérrez the person.

When I looked at the talk section, there wasn’t a ton of contention – I’ll explain more in the next paragraph – and some editors agreed with me that the article lacks detail on his life and another saying that the Spanish language version is far more detailed. These were from a little over a decade ago so I assume it’s made some improvements in this time, but I feel it could still use more discussion beyond liberation theology.

Flaws aside, there’s a lot more I like about this article. Its fairly unbiased, with its editors doing a lot of work to explain concepts he helped popularize within Christian and leftist discourse and exploring how his background and education shaped his politics and interest in theology. The article, I think, would benefit from even more discussion of this and how his experiences post-graduation shaped him and how specifically his concepts influenced revolutionaries throughout the 20th century.

The article offers a detailed list of his important works and has 25 references, ranging from biographies about Gutiérrez, newspaper articles, books and articles about liberation theology, not to mention three books and articles as further reading. Obviously the article has room for improvement, but looking at it makes me pretty confident that past editors have given me ample resources to help me improve it further.

Elena Caffarena

This represents Latin American history because it discusses the Chilean women’s emancipation movement. There is very little to this article which makes discerning if there are any biases difficult. It does not start with mentioning that she has a journalist granddaughter, but it was included. There are currently only two sources used, one is a book that discusses all of the Latin American countries and how they changed over time. The other is a biography of her life written by the Chilean national library. This source is in Spanish and as a non-speaker I am not sure how helpful it will be, it may cite other sources that are in English which would be helpful. I will improve this article by adding much more content too it. Fleshing out the details of the work she did, and of her life. I could also add a section on how her work was received (if there is any information on this.

La Violencia

This event is presented mostly as a conflict where the left radicals are inciting violence, when in reality both sides incite violence and retaliate. This bias heavily supports the Colombian government, giving less information on the rebels issues. The sources are actually decent, when they are used at least. There are many secondary sources by notable historians, however there are multiple unsourced areas. Improving this article requires the addition of sources to back up unsourced claims, as well as including information on the Colombian government’s violence—not just the rebel’s.

Adela Hernàndez

How is this aspect of Latin American history represented?

This Wikipedia article is comprised of five sentences, total. All five of those sentences appear to be factual and relevant, describing Hernández’s past and present career and explaining her status as Cuba’s first transgender politician.

Do you see any biases?

The information presented is minimal but relevant, and it all appears to be mostly unbiased. Even less complimentary details about Hernández’s life such as her imprisonment during the 80’s due to transphobic laws are presented in a generally neutral manner.

What kinds of sources are used?

The major problem with this article is that both of the sources used are news articles from 2012 that have since been deleted, leaving all of the information provided essentially without a source. The quality of ABC News and the Vancouver Sun as relevant sources for a Wikipedia article is already questionable, and the fact that both news stories have since been deleted adds further suspicion to the verity of the information being presented.

How might you improve the article to meet Wikipedia’s standards and show your skills of historical research and analysis?

I can improve this article by finding more recent sources, or at least ones that are still in existence; then I can provide citations for what has already been written and hopefully add more unbiased facts about Adela’s career, personal life, political stances, etc. This is a very basic Wikipedia article to begin with, so elaborating on it should be fairly straightforward as long as I can find enough unbiased, good quality sources to synthesize into my own words.
